If you are putting some of your things in a storage unit, you need to make sure that you take the proper steps to protect your belongings.

Use Pallets

You don't want to put your belongings directly on the floor of your storage unit. While on the floor of your storage unit, they could become damaged by anything that spills on the floor or seeps into your storage unit.

The easiest way to elevate your belongings is by putting pallets on the floor of your storage unit. This is a simple way to create a barrier between your belongings and the floor. You will not be able to monitor your belongings at all times, so this is the best way you can make sure that everything is protected from the unexpected inside of your unit.

Wrap Everything in Industrial Plastic

Next, unless you want your boxes and belongings to come out covered in a thin layer of dust, you need to cover up all of your boxes. The easiest way to do this is by purchasing a large roll of industrial plastic. You'll take the roll and wrap it around your stack of boxes, going around the stack until it is entirely covered up. Make sure that you warp the plastic around the top of the boxes as well.

Use Drop Cloths

Finally, for any furniture that you have inside of your storage unit, you are going to want to wrap them up in canvas drop cloths. Canvas does not hold onto moisture and will ensure that your furniture does not develop a mildew scent due to retained moisture. You can also use furniture pads to cover up your furniture and keep everything safe.

Use Plastic Storage Bins

Another way to protect your belongings is by storing them inside of a plastic storage bin. Cardboard boxes are really best for moving and temporary storage as cardboard boxes absorb moisture, which can ruin your belongings if they are stored inside of cardboard boxes for an extended period of time.

Plastic storage containers do not allow moisture inside of them and, thus, are better for long-term storage situations. Plastic storage containers are also more sturdy than cardboard boxes and are easier to stack on top of one another inside of a storage unit.
